The St. Benedict Medal is a Christian sacramental medal containing symbols and text related to the life of Saint Benedict of Nursia, used by Roman Catholics as well as some Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists and the Western Orthodox, in the form of amulets, charms or talismans. The medal is one of the oldest and most honored medals used by Christians and due to the belief in its power against evil, many medals have been struck since medieval times. It bears the Vade retro satana (“Step back, Satan!”) formula on one side (attributed to Pope Leo XIII), and various images and inscriptions on the other side. These include a cross; Saint Benedict holding an open book with his rule written inside; a raven above him with a loaf of bread in its beak; “exorcizamus te“ (“We exorcise you“); “nomine Domini“ (“In the name of our Lord“); “crux sancti patris Benedecti“ (“Cross of [our] Holy Father Benedict“); “crux sacra sit mihi lux! Nunquam draco sit mihi dux!”(“May this holy cross be my light! May never dragon be my guide!”); cœlestis hostia,” (“Heavenly Victim“), etc.
